Notes
English: If an elephant was killed in the Grasslands, the ivories were reserved for the king. The size and strength of the animal corresponded to the power of the king, who was reverently addressed as 'elephant'. This oliphant, a side-blown musical instrument, probably sounded at festivals to accompany the dances. In the past, oliphants may also have been used as a bugle in warlike conflicts. The brownish discoloration speaks for the high age of this oliphant.
