Summary[edit]
DescriptionShockley rockcress, Boechera shockleyi (31556770977).jpg |
Shockley rockcress, Boechera shockleyi, California, White Mountains, Deep Springs Valley drainage, elevation 1969 m (6460 ft). In a genus notorious for difficult to identify species, this rockcress is one of the most distinctive and easily recognized. The difficult species tend to have hybrid origins, combining the chromosomes of two or more species like this one, which only has a single set of chromosomes. These latter diploid species tend to have the most consistent and distinctive features, which in Shockley rockcress include dense fine hair covering all plant parts except the smooth hairless arching fruits, and the densely crowded lower leaves. Shockley rockcress has a strong preference for carbonate soils and rock outcrops (dolomite at this location), and is found below about 2500 meters (8200 feet) elevation where such parent rock is most abundant in the southern and eastern Great Basin of eastern California, Nevada, and western Utah, southward in California and Nevada into the northern Mojave Desert, and isolated also in the San Bernardino Mountains of southern California. |
