CDFW Desert Region Environmental Scientist Kevin Brennan was in the field on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014 to survey desert bighorn sheep activity near La Quinta in Riverside County. Brennan described the survey efforts as a “health and welfare check” as a follow up to the previous week’s activity in which a CDFW helicopter survey crew captured bighorn sheep to affix GPS collars. The GPS collars will allow researchers to estimate population sizes, track movements and habits and develop an overall better understanding of the endangered species. Despite Brennan's best efforts to spot them this day, the sheep remained out of sight. With more than 20 years’ experience working for CDFW, Brennan routinely works with the desert bighorn sheep surveys and monitoring. Today, he is looking for any sheep that may have failing health or injuries. The wildlife area is contiguous with the urban developed area and sheep sightings are common on the golf course, visible in the background. CDFW photo by Kyle Orr. |
