? The mule isa hundred thousand times bigger than you are. But Thumb replied: If my mother puts the reinson the mule and lifts me up, so that I can sit in themules ear, I shall tell it to go to this side or to thatside. So the father, being a good-natured man, said: Well, we can try for once. So saying he went off to his work in the jungle. After a little time the mother brought the mule, andshe lifted her tiny son, placing him, as he directed, inits ear, then explained to him where he should go tofind his father in the jungle. Thumb acted as a big man, ordering the mule whereto go; calling to it, when it came to turns in the road,* Go carefully, go carefully. As he thus spoke, two men came out of the jungle;they heard his voice, but seeing no man were verymuch astonished. They said to each other: Howcan it be that a mule is speaking! Let us follow andsee where it is going. So they followed it into the jungle, till they reachedthe place where the father of Thumb was cutting fire-wood.
