is Hoi or Hu. TheChinese Shan muleteers have a curious call—a highwhistling note resembling the cry of a kite—whenthey collect their mules in the jungle or drive themon the roads. Kachins have a call like Prrrrrrwhen they wish their ponies or cattle to go quickly. Shan ponies are sturdy little animals, eleven ortwelve hands high. They are surefooted, and areseldom shod; horses or ponies with broken kneesare rarely seen. During the dry season, if they arenot working, they are turned out of the village inthe early mornings, to feed on the grass by water-courses, returning at night to a feed of paddy thathas been soaked in water. They are then tied to apost in a stable or under the house. Piebald horsesare believed to bring good luck. Mares are neverridden. If a Shan should be seen riding on a marchis countrymen would consider him mad. The pigs are almost always black. Sows are veryfierce at the time when their young are born, and forsome days guard them with care, making determined

After a week a sow pays no further atten-tion to her young, except when they make tooobstreperous attempts to gain their rightful nourish-ment. If a sow has a very large litter some of heryoung ones leave her and seek for a foster-motherwith a small family. The curious spectacle maythen be seen of a sow with piglets of various agesand sizes trotting behind. Pigs are fed twice a day,at dawn and in the evening. Their food is put intolong troughs made of ** dug-out trees. They are fedon swill of bran-and-water, mixed with edible ferns,which are boiled until quite soft. Pigs act as scavengers in the villages, roamingthrough the streets all day, returning to their enclosuresnear the homes of their owners at sunset. Thewomen sing curious little songs when they call theirpigs.
