Italiano: Teatro Romano - Sessa Aurunca (CE). Portato alla luce e restaurato tra il 1999 e il 2003, è uno degli edifici pubblici di età romana più imponenti scoperti in Campania.
Fu costruito nel I secolo d. C., sotto l'impero di Augusto, e restaurato ed ampliato nel II secolo d.c. L'edificio, con murature conservate fino a 20 metri d'altezza, comprende una cavea di 110 metri di diametro, con gradinate in calcare che potevano ospitare da 7000 a 10000 spettatori. Consistenti sono anche i resti dei velarium, che proteggevano gli spettatori dal sole, e del grande edifico scenico, lungo 40 metri e con tre ordini sovrapposti di 84 colonne. La scena era un vero museo a cielo aperto dove gli artisti e gli scalpellini romani usarono molte qualità di marmi per realizzare le decorazioni architettoniche costituite da fregi, architravi e capitelli scolpiti. Le colonne furono realizzate con marmi provenienti dalla Numidia, dall'Egitto e dalla Grecia, mentre i capitelli con marmi di Carrara e di Atene. Molte le sculture e le iscrizioni dedicatorie decoravano il teatro. Ricordiamo le statue di Livia, moglie di Cesare Augusto, Agrippina maggiore, madre di Caligola, le sculture di Matidia maggiore, Sabina, Plotina e di Matidia minore. |
