everal handshakes of mutual congratulation, were making for the ferry at racing speed. There afriend of mine, the old sheikh, lord of two families, came to meet me, bringing with him a delicious bunchof grapes as a present. Hastily a boat was com-mandeered for my use and the sail spread, and thirty-four days after leaving it (during which I had haltednine), I sat down in the mess again. My journeyings end here. Should the descriptionof them prove of no interest to others, the time spentin writing them has not been wasted, for I have livedevery moment of them again. The steamer tugging atthe sudd-block; the antelope switching off the fly; 3i6 SERVICE AND SPORT IN THE SUDAN the lordly walk of the elephant; the whisper of thetrees in the forest; the hopes and fears in pursuitof game and water; the mirage with the terabil swim-ming in it; the mighty sand-drifts; the stones; thesand; the sun, moon, and stars; the silence; aye mycompanions and comrades, black and white—every-thing. > ■

CHAPTER XXIV The camel, its faults and virtues—Its capabilities—Care must be lavishedon it—A pet in some tribes—How it should be ridden—Do not crowdyour camels. I WOULD be ungrateful indeed if I did not put in aword about the camel. The Arabs say that its mincinggait and the supercilious carriage of its head is due tothe fact that it knows the hundredth attribute of God(the beads of the Moslems rosary, on which they aretold, number ninety-nine). There seems to be a lot of question, not as to thepower of that animal to do long and continuousmarches, but as to the amount of harm done him bythe same. A year in the Camel Corps not only converted meinto a believer and lover, but induced me always toobserve his capabilities, the result on him of hardwork and the way he was treated. My convictionnow is that neither a very long march nor a series ofthem need harm a camel in the very least, if on themhe is cared for, and after things are over given a fewdays of thorough rest and care
