Summary[edit]

Description
English: Sermon of Sakyamuni Buddha, Southern Cliff Buddhist Sculptures Niche 69, Bazhong, Sichuan; 740 AD. Sakyamuni is shown flanked by two bhikkhus, two bodhisattvas, two dharmapalas, and two Vajrapani. An incense burner and two lions being attached to the bottom of the niche. Niche size: 226 × 180 × 77 cm. "Niche 69 is dated the twenty-eighth year of Kaiyüan, twelfth month (740 [sic]); its Śākyamuni group was donated by the official Dang Shouye. [...] Niche 69, dated 735 [sic] by inscription, is the earliest. Its representation is fairly simple and does not offer iconographic surprises, portraying Śākyamuni attended by two disciples, two Bodhisattvas, two Heavenly Kings and two Vajrapāṇi. Small-sized male and female donors are carved on the Vajrapāṇi's base. The images display chubby, thick-set bodies, squarish faces with round eyes. The Vajrapāṇi's threatening posture and wrath lack conviction because of the excessive use of caricature." – Howard, Angela Falco (1988). "Tang Buddhist Sculpture of Sichuan: Unknown and Forgotten" in Bulletin of the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, Stockholm (No. 60).
