English: Exhibit in the Old Colony History Museum - Taunton, Massachusetts, USA.
SERAPHINE 1835 Bird's eye maple, rosewood Maker: James A. Bazin Canton, Mass. Gift of Miss Henrietta Leonard This type of reed type organ is known as a seraphine. It was made by Bazin in 1835. Made of rosewood (exterior) and bird's eye maple (interior), the instrument has black and white ivory capped buttons instead of keys. An interesting design feature is the use of embossed paper simulating leather on the inside of the lid and exterior of the bellows. Two metal pump pedals extends from inner bellows. The instrument was purchased by and used at the Unitarian Church in Norton, Massachusetts for many years before its donation to the Society in 1929. A seraphine is a type of angel, and therefore a perfect instrument for church use. |
