the feet of Richard the Second, projecting on the pavement; andElizabeth, daughter of Henry the Seventh, one nearly opposite on the southside equally plain. Besides these, there repose in this chapel, under stonesonce plated with brass, the bodies of Thomas of Woodstock, duke of Glou-cester, and John Wallham, bishop of Salisbury. The brass on the gravestoneof the latter still remains tolerably perfect, but that of the former has beenlong removed. WESTMINSTER ABBEY.The solitary and forlorn SHRINE OP EDWARD THE CONFESSOR Now stands a mere skeleton of what it once was. This beautiful memorialconsists of three rows of arches ; the lower pointed, the upper round. Oneach side of the lower was a most elegant serpentine pillar : the two westernnow only remain; and a capital to the east. The wooden Ionic top is muchbroken, and covered with dust. The mosaic is picked away in every part withinreach; only three lozenges of about a foot square, and five circular pieces ofthe- rich marbles, remain.
