Summary[edit]
DescriptionSediment in Bohai Sea (MODIS 2019-06-12).jpg |
English: Tan- and green-colored sediment filled the Bohai Bay in early June 2019. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of sediment-stained waters of the Bohai Bay on June 10, 2019.
The Bohai Bay is the innermost bay of the Bohai Sea (Bohai Gulf) which is, in turn, the innermost gulf of the Yellow Sea. Two other bays of the Bohai Sea are the Liaodong Bay, to the north, and Liazhou Bay to the south. Heavily populated and heavily polluted, the Bohai Bay receives the runoff from sixteen rivers, each of which carries sediment and silt from the eastern North China Plain to spill into the waters of the Bay. To the south of Bohai Bay is the Shandong (or Jiaodong) Peninsula, which forms the eastern limit of the Bohai Bay and the western side of the Laizhou Bay. Heavy tan sediment pours from the Yellow River to discolor the waters of the Laizhou Bay and the Bohai Sea. Faint discoloration of sinking sediment can be seen throughout the waters in this image, even far from the shorelines. Some of the color may come from phytoplankton, which are microscopic plant-like organisms that can reproduce in large numbers when conditions (water temperature, sunlight, nutrients) are favorable to create “blooms” which are visible from space. |
