Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The occasional trains which had run to Schierke until 1989 were out of bounds to anyone who did not have a permit to stay in this trade union holiday village. i.e all westerners.Passenger Trains were not at this time running beyond Schierke.
A nice little DDR period tableau describes the line as having been begun in 1896 and opened as far as Schierke on 20 June 1898. The average gradient between Drei Annen Hohne and Schierke is 3 per cent over 4.5km. Brocken station is at an altitude of 1126m, about 17m below the summit. This is reached without cogwheel assistance, a European record. The railway is maintained (then) as a technical monument of the GDR.
