Summary[edit]

Description
English: Schaub Pirolette Super, radio receiver with tubes, 1951/52 (a similar earlier version was released in 1949/1950). Museum für Kommunikation, Frankfurt, Germany. The Pirolette series look like portable radios, but they weren't. These were mains-powered radios employing just two tubes. This cost-saving was made possible (a) by using combination, multi-role tubes (b) by using solid-state rectifier (c) by omitting the power transformer - the rectifier was connected directly to mains AC, very very unsafe decision. Perhaps, the latter explains the Piro in Pirolette (wink). Photo by Maximilian Schönherr with help from Lioba Nägele.
