Description
English: Australian troops, wearing their familiar slouch hats, have been photographed resting at the roadside with their packs. An ambulance and two lorries, one loaded with timber, pass along the road behind them. The telegraph poles and wires suggest that this photograph was taken near a town.

The Australian and New Zealand troops were courageous soldiers and suffered huge losses, particularly in 1916 at Pozieres and again in 1917 at Poelcappelle. They blamed these losses on what they felt was the poor judgement of the British High Command.
