La fuente monumental levantada en su honor, fue inaugurada en 1932 por el presidente de la República don Niceto Alcalá Zamora.

El monumento ha sufrido alguna variación: originalmente tenía un bajorrelieve del periodista, desaparecido durante la Guerra Civil. En el año 1983 se colocó la placa con la inscripción actual.

José Estrañi y Grau, Periodista y escritor satírico. Se inicia en Valladolid fundando varios periódicos entre los que destacan La Murga y El Trueno Gordo que alcanzó gran difusion. Posteriormente se asienta en Santander donde ejercería de redactor en La Voz Montañesa, publicando unos comentarios satíricos llamados "pacotillas" que alcanzan gran popularidad, reproduciendose en todos los periódicos de España. De fácil pluma, escribió también varias obras teatrales.
