rnal side.These houses were the scene of a constant interchange of visitsbetween the distinguished families and residents of Cambridge. The great-grandfather of Mr. Hilliard was Timothy, who wasdescended from ancestors who lived in the seventeenth centuryin the town of Kensington, originally a part of the old town ofHampton, New Hampshire. He fitted for Harvard and graduatedthere. He later became a Congregational minister, served as chap-lain of the English troops at Fort William in Boston Harbor,spent the first years of the American Revolution in an old parishon Cape Cod, and then was called to the ministry of the FirstChurch in Cambridge, where he spent the rest of his life. Hismothers grandfather, Jason Haven, was minister of the FirstChurch in Dedham, Massachusetts. As a youth Mr. Hilliard was deeply interested in general litera-ture, the classics, in history, and later in social service work. FromCambridge his parents removed to Roxbury, which he said: Wasan ideal home for a boy.

He later entered the Roxbury Latin School, where hewas under the instruction of Mr. Short, a distinguished classicalscholar. Then, besides the schools and the Athenaeum, as meansof culture, he attended regular courses of lyceum lectures. Entering Harvard, he was graduated in the class of 59 with thedegree of A.B., and later was given the degree of A. M. He studiedfor the Episcopal priesthood at the General Theological Seminaryin New York, and was graduated in 63. He was ordained deaconby the late Bishop Horatio Potter of New York that same year,and was ordained priest by the late Bishop Manton Eastburn ofthe Massachusetts diocese a short time later. His first charge was as rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Bos-ton, a parish which long ago was merged in another. He thenwent to
