seventy-five days they had overrun andsubdued the Kingdom of Jerusalem ; now they musthave the capital itself, the cause and motive of theCrusades, the object of the veneration of Christianand Moslem alike. Saladin first took up his posi-tion on the west side, facing the line of walls fromthe gate of David to the gate of Saint Stephen. Hewas amazed to see the battlements packed withcountless defenders, who indeed could not find roomin the crowded houses and churches. He soon dis-covered that the ground was ill-chosen, for the greattowers of Tancred and David (or the Castle of thePisans, as it was then called) commanded his bat-teries, and the frequent sallies of the Christians droveback his engineers and opposed the erection of hismangonels. Moreover, the sun was in the eyes ofthe Moslems, and they could not see to fight till theafternoon by reason of the glare.
