Summary[edit]

Description
English: A sailor holds his cap during the decommissioning ceremony for HMS Walney.

Crew members from the Sandown Class Mine Countermeasures Vessel (MCMV), HMS Walney, said goodbye to their homeport of HM Naval Base Clyde on Friday, October 15, when the ship was decommissioned from the Fleet.

During the decommissioning ceremony, the Commanding Officer and crew were joined by Naval Base workers and dignitaries including the Mayor of Barrow and his wife, the Lady Mayoress.

HMS Walney will next sail to Barrow-in-Furness to say farewell to its affiliated town before continuing its journey to her final port of call at Portsmouth.

Serving the Royal Navy with distinction for the past 18 years, HMS Walney has most recently been undertaking a period of Operational System Training in Scotland.

A Single Role Minehunter and the fourth of the Sandown Class to enter service, the vessel was designed to search for, locate and destroy sea mines in water depths of up to 200 metres.

Built of Glass Reinforced Plastic to deter magnetic mines, Walney had a number of mechanical and electronic systems to assist in its job of minehunting, including a Sonar type 2093 AND Seafox Mine Disposal System.
