Image title | The garden was created by the Quaker Gibsons, one of the Saffron Walden's leading families; it was not attached to their house, but formed on open ground on the edge of the town. The garden certainly existed by 1828 but serious development began c.1840 in collaboration with William Chater, a local nurseryman and garden designer. After being inherited by the Fry family of Bristol, the garden was open to the public by 1902 and was leased to the Borough Council from 1918. It was restored in the early 2000s and is Grade II*-listed: https://www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1000238 . The garden is divided by walls and hedges into several smaller gardens. Individual features may be hard to date but, but the rose garden is thought to be one of the oldest parts of the Gardens. |
