English: In Igbo mythology ( Igbo is in Eastern Nigeria)Trees represent certain deities or ancestors and serve as mediators or as a link to the religious realm, and are associated with cultural beliefs in the aftelife.
Some tress like kolanut tree and others are specifically mapped as sacred tree in Igbo mythology but some trees not specifically mapped out attain the status of sacredness by the forest on which they grow or by declaration by the chief priest or native priest or an individual. The image above shows a pawpaw tree which is not a sacred tree in Igbo mythology but attain scarednes by declaration of native priest or an individual. The priest or the individual wrapped the tree with white, black and red clothes and then tied it with ọmụ ( young palm fronds) and makes it a worshipping place or his chi ( personal God) Thereby making that pawpaw tree sacred .
