Sacramental gathering at Ekwendoni, Malawi, ca. 1894-1904
Photograph of a large gathering, possibly of the Ngoni people. Many of the people are wearing white and the women can be seen to be wearing white bands around their foreheads. There is a mountain visible in the background. Ekwendeni, which is in the northern region of Malawi, was founded by Scottish missionaries and has one of the oldest churches in Malawi.; This belongs to a series of Church of Scotland Foreign Missions Committee lantern slides relating to Dr Robert Laws (1851-1934) the Scottish Missionary. In 1875, inspired by David Livingstone (1813-1873), Laws travelled to Malawi and was involved in the foundation of the mission station of Livingstonia on the shores of Lake Nyasa. During the succeeding 50 years he also established a network of hundreds of schools. In 1908 Laws was elected moderator of the General Assembly of the United Free Church of Scotland.
