Summary[edit]
DescriptionSacello Milite Ignoto Roma.jpg | The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, symbol of all the Italian soldiers dead during the World War I. The body of the unknown soldier was chosen from 11 remains by a woman whose son was killed during the war and never recovered. The inscription is the motivation with which the King Victor Emmanuel III awarded the posthumous Gold Medal of Military Valour to the unknown soldier: «Worth descendant of a brave ancestry and millenary civilization, he resisted uncompromisingly in the most disputed trenches, showed his bravery in the fiercest battles and eventually fell in battle longing for no reward but the victory and the greatness of his Fatherland. 24 May 1915 - 4 November 1918». The body is buried in the National Monument to Victor Emanuel II in Rome.» | ||
