English: The last of five transformers for the new 400 kV substation in Hackney; London. Overhead cables at 275 kV have been taken down between here and West Ham and the first of two 400 kV cables have been laid in a tunnel. The transformers arrived on 14 axle trailers from Tilbury Docks because they are sourced in Germany. Once upon a time, such items would be manufactured in Michael Faraday's home country.
The amazing ALE company of Hixon, Stafford is British and and has performed contracts around the world. More photos of the company's operation and in particular relating to this project can be seen in the company prospectus, p34. In the background, the current state of play on the development at Lea Bridge (paradise) Dock. The previous delivery utilised the rare Unipower tractor unit, but this time a Faun was utilised. The Faun company from near Nuernberg specialises in crane transporters and heavy vehicles for the Bundeswehr - a bit like Scammell which went down the tubes as GB plc started to specialise in complex financial products or produce olympic sportspeople (which is partly why this substation is being transformed (sic) due to the 400 kV tunneled cables replacing 275 kV overhead lines through the 2012 Games site.
