Description

St. Paul’s Shipwreck Island: This small privately owned island lies out in the sea facing the mainland village of St Paul. It has no redeeming features except for a statue of St Paul and a very small building which can be called a form of chapel. It is bare of any other buildings. It got its name from the tradition dating to Roman times which relates the story of St Paul’s shipwreck on his way to Rome to be judged by a Roman court as he had declared himself a freeborn Roman citizen. This tradition says that St Paul was shipwrecked on this island and the surrounding reefs. Some historians doubt the authenticity of this tradition as there are no descriptions in the writings of St Paul which relate to these islands. Some skeptics even say that St Paul was shipwrecked off the coast of Greece, but the tradition that he came here holds more credence.
