Summary[edit]

Description

Crossing over to the Island of Gozo is either by ferry from Cirkewwa or fly over by the seaplane from Valletta waterfront.

One of Malta’s handicaps is that of being an island and so we have to depend on either sea transport which is cheaper and can carry bigger amount of cargo over longer distances while air transport of goods is more expensive can take limited amount of cargo and the distance is less than that of a cargo ship.

Malta always depended for all its raw material on supplies from abroad both aerial or sea ones. The dire necessity of the Maltese on air or sea transport was seen during the Second World War when the arrival of a sea convoy was seen as a near miracle while air transport was difficult and far between. Air transport is essential for Malta and as we live on an island some airplanes are fitted in a way that they can land on the sea surface. Even during the Second World War seaplanes were common and they had their headquarters at Birzebbugia. - MALTA
