Description
English: KUNDRATHUR CAVE TEMPLES: KUNDRATHUR, UDAYAGIRI CAVE,MADURAI DISTRICT.
English: Kundrathur can be reached by a short travel of 17 kms to Varichiyur on Madurai - Sivagangai road. Kundrathur lies at 1 km distance on Varichiyur - Kalimangalam road.

KUNDRATHUR CAVE TEMPLES:

Kundrathur caves can also be called as " Cluster of cave temples ". Because, there are 3 caves excavated in the same place. All the three caves are dedicated to Shiva.
1. The East facing cave found at the base of the rock slope, which is closer to the road is called Udayagiri cave. 

2. Another cave is seen on the western side of the hillock is called Asthagiri.

3. The East facing third cave is excavated on another hillock, behind these two caves. This cave is known as Neelakantesvarar Koyil. 

1. Udayagiri Cave:

               As the rock slope touches ground well extended forward and also due to the deep scooping of rock, larger floor area is found in front of the cave. Udayagiri cave has the Garbagruha structure only; the other usual structures like facade, muga mandapam are not found. 

There is a Nandhi, a later addition placed in front of Garbagruha. The entrance to Garbagraha is embraced by pilasters on each side and other two pilasters are seen at the juncture of side walls. The pilasters bear Sathuram, Kattu and Sathuram structures. Lotus madelions engraved on the Eastern face of Sathuram. A dvarapala is seen in the right niche of the cave and a devotee (Adiyavar) is seen on the left niche of the Garbagraha entrance.

A sculpture of Ganapathy is seen on the Southern wall of the cave in a niche. And the Northern wall is found empty. 

The Garbagraha: Garbagraha is rectangular in shape with plain walls. The square type Aavudai and the Bhanam are created from the mother rock. The avudai part has jagathi, kandam and pattigai.

Sculptures :

The sculptures found in the cave are: 

1. Ganapathy (பிள்ளையார்)

2. Dvarapalar ( காவலர் ) 

3. Devotee ( அடியவர் )

Inscriptions: An inscription under dilapidated condition is found on the northern pilaster of the cave. Based on this inscription, the cave can be dated to 8th or 9th century. Udayagiri cave is under the control of State Archeological Department.
