English: KUNDRATHUR ROCK CUT CAVE TEMPLES, KUNDRATHUR,ASTHAGIRI CAVE, MADURAI DISTRICT.
2. ASTHAGIRI CAVE TEMPLE: Asthagiri cave is the second cave among the Kundrathur cave cluster. It is excavated facing west to the hillock and the Udayagiri cave. The basic architectural features of the cave forms the 1. The facade (முகப்பு) 2. Porch (முக மண்டபம்) 3. Sanctum sanctorium (கருவறை) A Nandhi which is seen in front of the sanctum is a later addition. As the rock slope extended down more on the northern side than the southern side, the northern wall of the cave is larger than the southern wall. THE FACADE (முகப்பு): Facade has two pilasters on the southern and northern side of the cave. The pilasters have usual Sathuram (சதுரம்), Kattu (கட்டு) and Sathuram (சதுரம்) structures. But, the lower Sathuram is unusually higher; Kattu and upper Sathuram are comparatively smaller in height. The curved Pothiga on both sides bear uththiram. The intermittent space between two pilasters leads to Mugamandapam. PORCH (முகமண்டபம்) : The floor, roof and walls are plain without any work.There are two stone frame seen at the entrance. Next to this tried two pilasters having square part and bands. Southern pilaster does not have such features clearly. SANCTUM SANCTORIUM (கருவறை): The roof and wall are with uneven surface. The centre part of the sanctum holds the Aavudai and lingam. The square type aavudai bears the architectural features of Ubaanam, Jagadi, Kambu, Kandam in between, linga at the centre and komuga at northern side. This cave is maintained by the local people.
