DescriptionRussula ellenae Thiers 847625.jpg |
Russula ellenae Thiers Image location: Forest of Nisene Marks State Park, Aptos, Santa Cruz Co., California, USA with Douglas-Fir and tanoaks, on soil Photos of dried specimen are after one month Odorless, or essentially so, when picked and none upon drying. Cap pale rose to deep pink with light yellow disc, dry and smooth. Wrinkly, but not truly striated. Cap, gills and stipe not bruising. Quite small. Cap only peeling near margin, but there easily. Gills not anastomosing, yellow becoming browner with age, starting at the cap margin. Pale white cream near apex of stipe and probably original color. Stipe bright white, smooth and unchanging. Cylindrical and stuffed with rounded bulb at base. Longer than cap width. Spores light yellow, warts of medium size and density, to maybe slightly tall. Isolated/no lines. Roughly 6.5×8 micros. Taste weakly acrid at first, the acridity fading and becoming mild. Not bad. Recognized by sight Used references: Russula species of Northern California (Davis), New species of Russula from Northern California (Thiers) Based on microscopic features
