Summary[edit]

Description
English: Rural Iffley The village lies on the slope of a low hill that rises gently from the River Thames - settlement began here over 1000 years ago, probably because the spot was safe from flooding. For centuries Iffley was a rural outlier to Oxford with farming and fishing the main activities of the cottagers (its geese and eels were noted). The village also possessed a full complement of country crafts and trades many of which carried on into the C20.

From the end of the C18 middle-class tradesmen started to build houses here and as the land between it and Oxford was developed the village became a suburb of the town. There was a horsedrawn tram from Iffley Turn by the end of the C20 and in 1928 Iffley was incorporated in the city. Nevertheless it retained its traditional character for several more decades, see the article on Iffley in 1955 here http://www.iffleyhistory.org.uk/Iffley%201955%20Article/1955Article.htm

Several open spaces have been preserved: this view is from Church Way down towards the river.
