Remains of the former French Consulate in Yamate, Yokohama, east (main entrance)

Summary[edit]

Description
English: The former French Consulate and its official residence was built on the lower spur of the French Hill (now a part of Minato-no-Mieru Oka Koen Harbor View Park) in Yamate-cho, Naka-ku, Yokohama under the design of the French architect Paul Pierre Sarda on March 1896. It was devastated by the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake. In 1930 it was rebuilt by a Swiss architect Max Hindel, born in 1887, who visited Japan in 1924, started building activities in Sapporo and moved to Yokohama in 1927. The consulate official residence was burned down by suspicious fire in 1947. What remains is unburned concrete on the ground floor and the well. Yokohama City acquired the French Hill area from France in 1971 and developed it as part of Minato-no-Mieru Oka Koen, and was finally opened to the public in 1972. During the construction of the park, four foundations of windmills for pumping the well water were also excavated around the hill.
