Summary
[edit]DescriptionRuins of Powder Magazine, Roseberry Mine - geograph.org.uk - 95057.jpg |
English: Ruins of Powder Magazine, Roseberry Mine. This was the daily view for the powder monkey, the nickname given for the storeman of the black powder used by the ironstone miners. The magazine was situated 200m or so from the mine, was substantially built of local sandstone and was surrounded by a bund crudely made of mine waste all to limit damage in case of explosion. Roseberry Mine itself was situated behind the bushes (middle distant) to which this building was connected by a tramway running adjacent to the present fence. The mine had a false start in the late 19c and was reopened in 1906. The building dates from first period of the mine and was reused.
