Description

On 13 November 1954, the first ever Rugby League World Cup came to a close with victory for Great Britain. The World Cup was initially contested by the four Test nations: Australia, Great Britain, France and New Zealand. The teams played each other in a league format with the top two teams contesting the final. New Zealand were victorious in 2008, and Australia most recently won the World Cup in 2013.

The images presented here are from a Department of External Affairs file on tours the New Zealand Rugby League team participated in. The file has minor details on tours the Kiwi's undertook from 1951 to 1965. The Department of External Affairs was an agency created by Archives New Zealand to describe records transferred to it until the late 1980s by the succession of government agencies, which had responsibility for external affairs in the New Zealand Government. Highlights noted here include a request from the Tourist and Publicity Secretary in Paris asking for the New Zealand Government to send more Kiwi Pins and Tikis to France to deal with the high demand from French fans of the Kiwi Rugby League team.
