Summary[edit]

Description

Gender and family symbols from Chapter I of Rudolf Koch's Book of Signs (the first six out of Koch's series of fourteen signs are included in this graphic):

Top row:

1) Symbol for a man (a vertical line with two upwards diagonal lines branching off near the top). This symbol can be mirror-image flipped vertically (inverted) to derive a symbol indicating the death of a man.

2) Symbol for a woman (a triangle with a vertical line connected to its top corner). This symbol can be mirror-image flipped vertically (inverted) to derive a symbol indicating the death of a woman.

3) Symbol for a pregnant woman. (This presumably could be inverted to indicate the death of a pregnant woman, but such a symbol is not included in Koch's Book of Signs.)

4) Symbol for a family (a man and woman together with children). The central part (without the circles symbolizing children) could presumably be a symbol for a mated couple, but this does not appear separately in The Book of Signs.

Bottom row:

5) Symbol for a man and woman having sex ("united for procreation").

6) Symbol for childbirth (a woman having just given birth).

The SVG file is my own work, based on the simple geometrical symbol shapes found in the Book of Signs (first published in 1930) by Rudolf Koch (died 1934, over 80 years ago), and also the PD SVG file File:Obscure-female-symbols.svg.
