[edit]DescriptionRoyal Maribe Zapcat team races through the Newquay surf MOD 45147723.jpg |
English: The Royal Marine 'Zapcat' team skim the waves whilst taking part in the Zapcat Racing Championships at Watergate Bay Newquay, Cornwall. One member of the team controls the throttle and rudder, whilst another member helps to steer by tipping his weight from one side to the other.
Zapcat racing is the latest emerging sport recognised by the Royal Marines Sports Association (RMSA). These 4 meter inflatable boats were originally designed in South Africa in the late 80's as surf rescue craft. They were quickly adapted by locals to race both in the surf and also on rivers. This then progressed to become an internationally recognised racing class. The racing exploded onto the UK market in 2001 and has now become the largest single design motorsport in the world. The sole design means that you donÕt have to be rich to do it as there are only certain modifications that can be made to the engine once these are done it's then down to the skill of the team. The boats are only powered by a 50 HP 2 stroke engine whilst the boat and engine weigh a mere 140kg. Due to this light weight, the boat has the same power to weight ratio of a Ferrari Testarossa at 340 Brake Horsepower(BHP) per ton. They have a top speed of around 50mph and pull around 3Gs in the tightest turns. The racing itself provides an excellent spectator sport as the cross shore leg of the circuit is normally only about 20 - 30 meters from the beach. The day's racing consists of 16 heats of which each boat will race in 5 trying to accumulate enough points to qualify for the final. At the end of the heats all the boats which have not made the final race off in a 'Wildcard Final' the winner of this then gets the last place in the final. The boats then race for the usual podium positions. A league table with 2 divisions also runs where all points gained sort out the division placings.
