Title
Roman toilet spoon
Description
English: An incomplete and bent copper-alloy toilet spoon of Roman date. The circular-section shaft is bent, has a longitudinal split at the top and is missing its loop. At the base of the shaft are three moulded decorative ridges, which give way below to the small, slightly angled sub-circular plate. The object measures 38.7mm long, up to 6.5mm wide (at the plate) and weighs 1.58g. Several such artefacts were found in excavations in Colchester (N. Crummy; 1983; pp. 59-60). They are believed to have been used throughout the Roman period. Theories as to their function range from ear-scoops, spoons for the removal of small quantities of cosmetics, or "hoofs" - implements used to push back the cuticle of nails.
