| Description |
English: A copper alloy toilet article probably dating from the Roman period, which is very unusual in being a combination of tools in one object. The body of the item is semi elliptical in profile; just a thin bar in plan and triangular in cross section. The curved edge tapers and has marked similarities to some cosmetic mortars. It is also almost sharp enough to consider use as a razor. The straight edge of this body is the thickest part and the side has been used to house more functions. Half is incised with transverse grooves to form a nail file. The other half has a lengthways groove which extends onto the flared end. This looks very much as if it was a nail cleaner when complete. At the other end, the body opens out into an oval scoop or spoon, possibly an ear scoop. A parallel for this item has not yet been found. It is in good condition, with a smooth dark green glossy patina. There are a few areas of pitting caused by corrosion and the nail cleaner end is incomplete. |
