Title
Roman scoop
Description
English: A fragment of a Roman cosmetic or surgical implement. The fragment is the scoop from an ear scoop or a spoon-probe. The scoop is small and narrow, and such scoops tend to be associated with the surgical ear scoop as opposed to the small cupped types which are thought to have been for cosmetic use. However, spoon-probes, used for the application of cosmetics also have a narrow scoop, and without the rest of the artefact it is difficult to determine whether this is a surgical or cosmetic article. Some examples of scoops are demonstrated in Crummy 'The Roman Small Finds From Excavations in Colchester 1971-1979' (1983, pages 60-61). The object is certainly Roman, but it is difficult to date such a fragmentary piece any more precisely.
