Roman plate brooch
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy plate brooch dating to the second century AD. The brooch is flat and comprises a central eye shaped plate with triangular extensions. The eye shaped plate is decorated with blue enamel and possesses a small central circular cell filled with white enamel. The triangular extensions are both decorated with degraded red enamel and two circular openwork lugs. One extension is damaged but the other terminates is a rounded end knop with circular cell. The cell is filled with blue enamel. On the underside of the brooch are two semi-circular lugs with iron corrosion sandwiched between them and a worn, semi-circular catchplate. The brooch measures 34mm in length and 22mm in width.
