Title
Roman enamelled 'eye' mount
Description
English: A copper alloy mount or stud, dating to the Roman period. The mount consists of a flat eye shaped plate. The plate has a central circular cell. The cell is divided into four smaller cells with a cross of reserve metal. The smaller cells which are diagonally opposed to each other are filled with red or white enamel. A circumferential channel encircles the central circular cell. Within the channel there are traces of white enamel. The underside of the mount plate is plain and flat. Two circular section attachment lugs extend from the underside of the plate, one at each corner. The lugs are worn and appear to be broken. The mount measures 30mm in length and has a maximum width of 17mm. It has a maximum thickness of 5mm.
