Roman ear-scoop

Title
Roman ear-scoop
Description
English: A Roman copper-alloy ear-scoop.

The artefact is of flat section, has round shoulders and gradually decreases in width and thickness, towards the base, where there is a circular, concave scoop. Both surfaces are decorated with a vertical groove which extends from top to bottom; on the reverse there is the trace of an addtional, parallel groove. At the apex is a circular loop, set at 90 degrees to the rest of the object.

Dimensions: 51.5mm long, 9.1mm wide, 1.4mm thick. Weight: 3.38g.

Ear-scoops are relatively common finds in Roman excavations (see, for example, Stead and Rigby 1986: fig. 56). This example is noteworthy in the fact that its form is more typical of a nail-cleaner, most ear-scoops having a circular-sectioned shaft.
