Title
Roman copper alloy dagger handle with an iron blade
Description
English: Roman copper alloy dagger handle with an iron blade

The dagger is fragmentary, comprising two fragments of the handle and hilt (with a combined weight of 76.6g). The uppermost fragment from the handle comprises the top of the handle and integral pommel (with a length of 27.5mm and a weight of 26.6g). The handle is circular sectioned (with a diameter of 15.2mm and a surviving length of 16mm) and has a central sub-oval opening (7mm x 5mm) to accommodate the dagger tang, which remains in place. The handle has horizontal ribbing and grooves. The pommel is oval, with sides diverging to the top (where the pommel has a width of 29.5mm and a width of 17.5mm). The top of the apex is dished and the corroded remains of the top of the tang are evident. It is possible that that an upper pommel fragment fitted on to the fragment to form an oval biconical pommel.
The lower fragment comprises the base of the handle, the hilt and the top of the blade (with a length of 46.2mm and a weight of 49.9g). The handle is circular sectioned (with a diameter 15.8mm and a surviving length of 15mm) with groves and ribbing. The top surface is slightly dished and the tang is evident at the centre (5mm x 3mm). The hilt is oval and gradually widens and broadens to the blade (with a maximum width and thickness of 36.6mm and 17.9mm respectively). There is no surviving evidence for applied decoration on the hilt. The top of the iron blade is present (with a surviving length of 19mm and a maximum corroded thickness of 16.2mm). The blade fracture has occurred relatively recently and indicates a blade of oval section at the break (with a width of 30.7mm and a thickness of 7.8mm). The sides of the blade are likely to have been straight, gradually tapering to the tip, to produce a triangular blade.
It is possible that the area between the two fragments is not broken and was composed of an organic handle of bone or wood. The copper alloy has a mid-green surface patina and elsewhere is pale-green.

The dagger is difficult to closely parallel with dagger handles usually comprising of riveted side plates, such as the examples published by Manning (1985, p 152-9, V6-15) and the example from the excavations at Usk (Manning, 29, no. 3) .
