Title
Roman chatelaine, reverse
Description
English: Copper-alloy plate from a Roman chatelaine, used for hanging a collection of cosmetic implements, probably including tweezers, a nail cleaner and an ear scoop. The item would probably be worn as a brooch or attached to a belt. The artefact measures 24 mm wide and 20 mm long. Its suspension loop is broken, as are the loops for suspending the bar for attachment of the implements. The object is decorated on both sides. The obverse is decorated with four ring and dots in between two horizontal bands of ridges and depressions. The ridges are decorated with etched diagonal lines. The reverse is decorated with a ring and dot in each corner and one in the centre. Other examples of chatelaines are illustrated in Benets (2000, pate 119; figs R07-0202 and R07-0203). This chatelaine is likely to date from the late 3rd or 4th century.
