Title
Roman Toilet Article: Ear Scoop
Description
English: A complete copper-alloy ear scoop dating to the Roman period. The ear scoop is flat, save for the circular spoon bowl, with a circular suspension loop, an off-centre punched circular hole, elongated neck, defined rounded shoulders and tapering body; the body tapers to a circular shallow scooped bowl with the open bowl parallel to the ear scoop body and loop. The neck is decorated with haphazardly incised intersecting lines creating a series of wedges and saltires. The ear scoop has been bent near the shoulders, probably from in situ damage. It has an overall dark green patina, measuring 58.3mm long, 7.9mm wide, 0.8mm thick and weighs 2.13 grams. The ear scoop is similar in style to nail cleaners illustrated in Eckardt and Crummy 2008, p. 124, fig. 64.
