Title
Roman Cosmetic Spoon
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy probable Roman cosmetic spoon or scoop. Only the elongated oval spoon or scoop is remaining with a raised circular 'collar' fragment which would have attached to the handle, now missing. There is no decoration save for the raised circular collar mentioned and the object has an even dark green patina.

Crummy and Eckardt (2007) mention that these scoops were often used as ear scoops or probes as well as being used for the removal of cosmetics from long-necked bottles. A similar shaped elongated spoon had been found in a grave in West Tenter Street, London along with tweezers and a small Black Burnished Ware pot in contexts dating to c. AD 250-300 and the authors suggest that perhaps this individual was a doctor and the spoon was used to administer salves or unguents (Ibid, pp. 82-82).
