Title
Roman Chatelaine
Description
English: An incomplete Roman (AD 1-410) possible chatelaine, consisting of an incomplete decorated plate with a solid, drilled loop at the complete (short) end. It measures 24.54mm in incomplete length, max.15.81mm at the 'shoulders' below the loop, max.3.67mm in thickness at the loop, and weighs 2.93g.

Directly below the loop is a ridge and V-sectioned furrow, from which curves the decorative plate (which is slightly curving in profile). Flanking the furrow is a band of decoration consisting of four joined X shapes and creating three lozenges at the centre with triangles offset above and below. Several of these retain traces of a (now black) enamel. The area immediately below (1.91mm thick) is plain and smooth, but from here are vertically six grooves, becoming deeper towards the break. Two ridges thus created are decorated with short transverse grooves. These are positioned either side of a central plain ridge.

The width of the plate narrows from the shoulders to 11.52mm at the break, which is 1.39mm thick.

The loop measures 4.84x3.67mm and the piercing is 2.36mm in diameter.

A Chatelaine was used for hanging a collection of cosmetic implements, probably including tweezers, a nail cleaner and an ear scoop. The item would have been worn as a brooch or attached to a belt.
