Title
Roman : Figurine
Description
English: A complete cast copper alloy votive figurine of Roman date. The figurine is in the form of a three-dimensional leg and foot. The foot is wearing a sandal represented by ribbed moulding running down the centre of the foot, around the calf and ankle and to either side of the ankle, extending to a flat sole. The recessed areas within the ribbing are decorated by herringbone patterned incisions.
From the upper area of ribbing around the calf the leg expands terminating in a flat surface with rounded edges just below the knee.

The metal has a mid brownish-green patina and survives in good condition. The figurine is 43.7mm tall, 21.5mm long and 7.5mm wide at the foot, 11.7mm in diameter at the calf and weighs 23.2g.

Objects of a similar form have been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database as Roman knife or razor handles (for example NCL-920745 and SUR-E8CBD2) however the lack of a slot for the blade makes this an unlikely attribution however the similarities are compelling evidence to suggest a contemporary date and that the object is votive in nature. Votive offerings were made in the hope of receiving a cure or as thanks for one.
