They have already tabbed up anunwieldy score of points on either side, and might have shortlysore need of an adding machine, but for the simple device ofsubtracting one score from the other, leaving one man plus a 20 Rod, Gun, and Palette in the High Rockies few points and the other flat for a fresh start. Sleepily noticinga slight up grade, a cloudy night without, and a chilly windthat seemed to promise rain, the artist went to bed and left themat it.

THE FIRST CAMP Tuesday the fifteenth. At daylight this morning, through a driving sleet storm fromthe west, a low-lying stream, whose deep channel paralleled therailway tracks, was made out through drifting mist. Its banks onthe farther side rose into raggedly timbered heights that lostthemselves in low hanging clouds. This was the headwater ofthe south fork of the Madison river. It was a good, steady,persistent sort of storm; there was no question about that. Butthe travel of a train has a noticeably mitigating effect on eventhe most determined looking foul weather. There is such a thingas removing beyond the sphere of influence. By the time Yel-lowstone was reached, there was a sensible moderation, thoughback up the tracks it could be seen raging over the hill tops inas pretty a mess of flying wrack as ever descriptive writer laidhimself out to picture.
