The half-mile advance brought Ewells corps northwardbeyond Andersons corps. Lees entire right wing faced westwardwhile his left wing faced northward, both guarding the approach ofthe Brock road from the north-west. The early morning of May 9, saw Lee riding along Ewells line.Through the pine-tree groves it wound its way almost northward to-ward Sedgwicks flank. Johnsons division on the extreme right wasextended through the forest, across ravines and marshes, beyond theHarrison and McCool farm-houses, to command the open ground thatslopes eastward to the Ny River. At Rodess right brigade theline bent outward in a salient, and near the centre of Johnsons posi-tion an acute angle in the line was formed by bending back his rightbrigade to face the Ny, This was the apex of the famous salient ofthe battle of May 12.
