Book Room. 15- Instrument-Room Very shortly after the completion of the work, the house wasvisited by Queen Elizabeth, who was entertained by Gresham in aprincely manner that was long remembered. After certain changesof ownership, the house and estate were eventually purchased in1713 by Mr Irancis Child, the banker, who is stated to have restoredthe original building which had become dilapidated. From theChild family the ))roperty subsecjuently passed by marriage into NOSTELL PRIORY, LUTON HOO, AND OSTERLEY 215 the possession of George Child-Villiers, th,e fifth Earl of Jerseyand the grandfather of the present owner. From the drawings ofOsterley House, in vol. xliii. of the Adam Series in the SoaneCollection, it is evident that Robert Adam was encraored, durino- theyear 1761, in preparing designs for structural work at the house
