Description
English: Reverse of a Russian stampless folded letter to Cette in France. Unpaid category 3. 'RIGA 20 NOV 1852' boxed cancel, manuscript '42' decimes rate, boxed black 'Aus Russland' (T.P.O.) transit, Bromberg-Berlin and Minden-Deutz transits, red 'PRUSSE/3/VALENCIENNES 8 DEC 52', Paris transit, arrival backstamp Cette.

Details:

  • November 20 (Julian) 1852 an unpaid letter inside datelined 8/20 November (Julian/Gregorian calendar) posted by SCHUBERT at Riga to Cette, France. 'RIGA 20 NOV 1852' postmark applied. Sender or post office clerk wrote on reverse 'Porto 3' and large blue'3', expressing the third weight category.
Dobin: 40 type 1.19. Foreign mail postmark, used 1850-1858, rarity 2, known in black and red.[1]
  • December 5 (Gregorian). 'BROMBERG 5 12 I BERLIN' T.P.O. backstamp applied.
  • Black 'Aus Russland' postmark applied. Used as a German entry/transit mark type RY6, found on the Breslau-Berlin and Bromberg-Berlin T.P.O.

  • December 6 (G). Transit to a different railway: (Gregorian) 'MINDEN 6 12 DEUTZ' T.P.O. backstamp applied.
  • December 8 (G). Red 'PRUSSE 3 VALENCIENNES 8 DEC 52' French entry mark, mail from Prussia (Prusse) entering France at the border town of Valenciennes. The small 3's show this mark was struck at Paris.
